This weeks video is making simple wooden toys for young children and help use up some of cut-off piece taking up room in your shop. There is a part of woodworking that goes beyond making things out of wood, and that is place where you are making things to please other people. In this case, making small, simple wooden toys for children to play with and use their imagination with. The toys to not have to be details, rudimentary is just fine ... have you ever looked at the commercial toys that are made for very young children? They are all very basic in shape and size. Making toys for small children is a bit of an art in it'self. The toys should be small enough that the kids can pick them out and carry they around, and they should also be functional enough to be able to be used, and to withstand a certain amount of children's tough play-time. There should not be any parts that are easily taken off or broken off and the toy should be of a medium weight so as to be stable when in use, but not to heavy to actually carry around. I prefer to leave them with a natural wood, that is ... no finish at all, the same way a cutting board gets after a couple of weeks of use. Any finish that was on it has probably all been washed off and the wood is taking on a natural patina of it's own. The same is true for wooden toy. According to a some studies, natural wood is more anti-bacterial than coated or finished wood because of the natural tannins and oils in the woods. In the end, it's all about making simple toys that kids will enjoy and get years of pleasure from, and that's .... a different kind of woodworking.
